Beautiful Mind Episode 11

Quick run-through:

Suk Joo continues sliding down the rabbit hole and at this point, we’ve lost all hope of him coming back out. Young Oh continues to experience different emotions and realizes that he is changing, changing enough to want a relationship. Until a test result slams that door right back in his face.

The Episode in 10 Moments:

  1. Young Oh never learned how to cry and Young Oh’s new patient comes with a whole host of complications

We open in the past. Teenage Young Oh’s astonished that all his female classmates cry when their homeroom teacher tells them not to fall asleep. As he tries to puzzle out why those words would make them cry, he concludes that it’s because of their fluctuating emotions. Except, he notices one of the boys crying as well. Seeing that has him remembering Gun Myung telling him to laugh when others laugh and to cry when they cry. At the remembered words, he takes note of the little tics in their faces and using that, tries to force himself to cry. He doesn’t get the last one of a furrowed brow, but his homeroom teacher assumes that Young Oh was just fighting back his tears. She thanks him for giving her the courage to say goodbye and hugs him. As she hugs him, Young Oh breaks down the component of tears and then states that it’s the body’s surest way of showing sadness. Unfortunately, he’s never learned how to cry. We then return to the present, to Young Oh telling Jin Sung that it’s just like she’d said and it would seem like he’s starting to fall in love with her, although it’s not an emotion he’s familiar with. He then asks her to tell him how she feels. Jin Sung though has no idea how she feels (girl’s in shock. Who can blame her?) and her answer frustrates Young Oh who reminds her that he can’t feel any emotions so it’s understandable that he’s confused. But if his personal WiFi is telling him that she too has no idea what she feels, then who’s meant to explain things to him? Except, when Jin Sung then declares that she has an answer for him, Young Oh suddenly clutches his side and then calls the ER to volunteer to do any of their surgeries. That done, he tells Jin Sung that the ER called and there’s an emergency. She points out that he called the ER but he’s all tomato, tomato and tells her that he will hear her answer at another time; preferably at a time when she’s had the chance to think carefully about what her answer would be, rather than the randomly given answer he’s sure she wants to give him (awwwww. He’s terrified of rejection. It’s so cute and hilarious all at once. Hehehehe). He insists that he wants her to think carefully about it and walks away. Jin Sung who watches him leave, smiles at the very obvious ploy to not get rejected. Young Oh heads to the hospital and is briefed by Sung Eun about his next patient: Shin Joo; a woman who’s partially paralyzed, seems to have Moyamoya disease and is twenty-nine weeks pregnant. Another problem though is Shin Joo’s insistence on not getting any surgery and carrying her pregnancy to term. But things get more complicated when they realize that she’s hemorrhaging and all the water she’s losing is putting her and the baby in shock. Young Oh makes the call and sends Sung Eun to notify obstetrics. He notices that Shin Joo already has two babies of her own and insists to her sister (friend?) who shows up that Shin Joo delaying could result in her death and although he can see how much she loves kids, she has to be alive to take care of her kids. It’s at this point that Shin Joo drops the bombshell: the baby she’s carrying isn’t hers (I hope she means biologically, i.e. she’s a surrogate and not that she’s possessed and she’s carrying some demon baby. Shit. I’ve been watching Supernatural for way too long).

2. Shin Joo places a monetary value on her life and that of her children and Young Oh tells Moon Kyung to put her money where her mouth is

Sung Eun’s on his way to call obstetrics when he runs into an old classmate: Han Mo in the elevator. Han Mo’s impressed that Sung Eun’s now a doctor and the two of them catch up on old times. Han Mo’s obviously fighting with dizziness although Sung Eun doesn’t notice. The man finally collapses but hits the edge of the elevator on his way down; meaning he has a huge cut and there’s a lot of blood. Sung Eun immediately rushes to the ER, barking for the surgical tools he needs to close the injury from which Han Mo’s rapidly losing a ton of blood. We then go back to Shin Joo who’s a surrogate (whew! No demon baby, thank heavens). Her friend turns out to be the woman who hooked her up with the couple who needed her as a surrogate and the woman begs Shin Joo to hold out for one more week (woman, the chick’s dying! What the fuck is wrong with you?) as there’s a difference between a baby that comes out at twenty-nine weeks and one that comes out at thirty. Shin Joo agrees to wait (girl, this same woman will add two more weeks to the thirty if you survive that long) and Young Oh cautions her by pointing out that with her hemorrhage, Shin Joo might not survive that long, and that very important baby might die. Shin Joo though is insistent, stating that if she has the child now, then her and her children will die, because the parents of the baby are the ones paying for her family’s rent and their upkeep and what they want in return is a healthy baby. Young Oh and Moon Kyung both glare at the intermediary who tries to wiggle out of the situation by claiming that her job is just to help people in need (yeah right). Young Oh then tells Shin Joo to make her decision. He pushes for her to give him an answer and Moon Kyung meets with him outside Shin Joo’s room to tell him that he has to be more considerate of Shin Joo’s situation and thus give her the time she needs to come to a decision. She scoffs as she declares that she’s sure that that’s how Young Oh acts with his girlfriend: he doesn’t give the girl enough room to think or reflect (hahaha). Young Oh insists that he gave her time; enough time even (true) and Moon Kyung asks who he’s talking about (pretty sure she’s adorable with a pixie cut and a big smile on her face). Young Oh then turns things around and tells Moon Kyung that the baby has only two more days left and so he wants Moon Kyung to try and convince Shin Joo to undergo surgery; you know, from the perspective of someone who’s considerate of Shin Joo’s situation.

3. The emotions keep on coming and it starts to sink in for Min Jae that Young Oh really is changing

Young Oh gets to his office and begins to pace. After staring at his not-ringing phone (so cute), he places a call to Jin Sung who watches the WiFi CallerID pop up but refuses to pick it. Until her brother shows up and makes to answer it. Jin Sung roughhouses him to the ground but accidentally picks up the call. And so, Young Oh’s able to hear her state that if he disturbs her again, she has every intention of cutting off his WiFi. He has no idea she’s talking to her brother and not to him and when Jin Sung finally realizes that she’s picked up, Young Oh declares that he’s unwilling to listen to her answer until they’re at an agreed place and at an agreed time (oh my. He just keeps getting cute. Hehehe). Jin Sung wonders if he’s angry and he admits to being angry, stating that his patient’s being irrational and he’s angry and frustrated about it. He keeps saying stupid things, especially when he thinks of Jin Sung. And it’s been like that since she jumped into the water. And the strangest thing is, he doesn’t hate this new side to himself (omo. Omo!). He ends the call and leaves his office where he runs into Min Jae who asks him when he’s operating on Shin Joo. She’s stunned speechless when Young Oh tells her that he’s waiting until the patient agrees to getting surgery. She’s even more stunned when Young Oh tells her that he’s waiting for Moon Kyung to convince the patient to have the surgery. Min Jae’s stunned and wonders who’s responsible; who’s changed him? She suggests that that Young Oh come to her for a CT scan and Young Oh asks if she’s acting as his doctor now. Min Jae smiles as she tells him that she’s willing to be for as long as he needs her (urgh. I hope not).

4. Hyun Joon’s all about the bottomline and Young Oh bonds with Moon Kyung (awwww)

Hyun Joon comes back from the shareholders meeting, smarting because Hyunsung is the least profitable company in the group. Soon Ho tells him not to bother about it because soon their stem cell treatment will have the power to put them on the map. Hyun Joon agrees and tells Soon Ho that his brother is aware of that as well, which is why he’s trying to push Hyun Joon out of the hospital by claiming that the hospital’s losing money. Hyun Joon however has a solution to that: downsizing. He tells Soon Ho to put it in place and turn expensive workers into contract staff and let go of the staff on maternity leave (Dude. Aren’t there labor laws to like shoot you in the ass?). Unaware that her job might soon be in jeopardy (she is pregnant after all), Moon Kyung tries convincing Shin Joo to change her mind. She brings up the fact that Shin Joo’s hemorrhage could lead to her dying and render her children orphans. The intermediary pipes up that even if that happens, Shin Joo’s a better incubator than the baby (what the fuck?!!!!!). Having had enough of her bullshit, Moon Kyung has Ho Young bundle the bitch on his shoulder and carry her out of the room, with the claim that the woman’s yapping is bothering Moon Kyung’s baby (a standing ovation for Moon Kyung. Woman, you kick ass). Alone with Shin Joo, she begs the woman to not let herself lose everything for the sake of money. Instead, she should be healthy and strong, and fight for her children. Outside the room, Young Oh joins Moon Kyung to ask her if she was able to convince Shin Joo to have the surgery. Moon Kyung then gets into character and states that if she chooses a patient, it means she will get surgery. When Young Oh keeps a straight face, she busts into a nervous laugh as she admits that she’s always wanted to say it like that because it sounded cool. Young Oh then replies in the same tone that he needs her in his ER because when he wants a staff member, then that person must be in his ER (hehehehe. That’s so cute. Bonding over characterization. How sweet). Moon Kyung makes to respond in her cool voice but Young Oh tells her that once’s enough. He walks away and Moon Kyung smiles. She heads to the nurses station but notices the somber air there. When she asks what’s the problem, Hae Joo suggests she log into the intranet. It is while there that Moon Kyung notices the she’s been transferred to an office job. She heads straight to Gun Myung’s office where he’s in a meeting with Soon Ho and Suk Joo and cries as she wonders why she’s being forced to resign when she’d just gotten pregnant for the first time in seven years, hasn’t cut her hours but has continued to put in her best. Soon Ho tries to pipe in that the hospital’s doing it out of concern for her health but Moon Kyung doesn’t buy it. Gun Myung tells her not to worry about it as he will look into it since he’s of the opinion that seasoned nurses such as herself shouldn’t be let go. She leaves and Gun Myung makes to go pay Hyun Joon a visit. But he is stopped, surprisingly (or unsurprisingly if you look at it) by Suk Joo who explains that they need Hyunsung back in the black so they can get enough revenue from the cell stem treatment as opposed to having to rely on external investors who will turn their stem cell research dream from an outlet to help people, into a profit making venture (seriously, just when you think the guy can’t be more of a devil’s spawn, he surprises you. Suk Joo really defines the term: the road to hell is paved with good intentions).

5. Young Oh adds another emotion to his repertoire and Sung Eun proves that he’s actually not that bad

Moon Kyung heads to meet Young Oh to inform him that Hae Joo would be the nurse assisting in Shin Joo’s surgery. Young Oh insists that it must be Moon Kyung because if what he’d wanted was a nurse with fast hands there are several of them that he can pick from the hospital. Who he wants instead, is Moon Kyung because he knows that should Shin Joo change her mind in the OR, Moon Kyung’s the only one that can talk her down. Moon Kyung replies that that’s the reason why she can’t be the one in the OR because it would be too humiliating. She’d been the nurse who’d wanted Shin Joo to fight but she cannot in good conscience continue the ruse especially now that she realizes that she’s not a working mother but a way for Hyunsung to cut costs. She bows and leaves a contemplative Young Oh behind. The nurses station is riddled with gossip and everyone pitying Moon Kyung for how she’s being tossed out. Sung Eun notices and then walks up to Moon Kyung to poke fun at himself for the horrible way he’d stitched up his friend. She tells him the right way to stitch up the temporal artery and he gives her a high five and calls her awesome. Everyone at the nurses station is all smiles as their focus is now on Sung Eun and after he tells her to write up an antibiotic prescription for his friend, Moon Kyung walks over to him and whispers as she thanks him for comforting her (awwww). He smiles, admits that he’s been caught and walks away.

6. Han Mo goes into shock and Sung Eun blames Moon Kyung

Moon Kyung heads to Han Mo’s beside where she administers the antibiotics, just a bit painfully (hahaha) as she tells him that Sung Eun had asked her to take care of him. Moon Kyung admits that he and Sung Eun aren’t really that close because Sung Eun had it way better than him, plus Sung Eun was a jerk. Both of them laugh at his words and Sung Eun joins in. Moon Kyung leaves and Sung Eun tells Han Mo that the latter’s test result came out. Turns out that he’s suffering from malnutrition. Sung Eun advises that Han Mo come back for regular checkups but Han Mo can’t spare the time as he could lose his job. He points out that Sung Eun’s still the same rich boy of the past and so has no idea what Han Mo’s talking about. Sung Eun insists that his life’s not all bed and roses. He works crazy hours for less than minimal pay and when he becomes a fellow, he will be practically unpaid. Han Mo still insists though that life’s better for Sung Eun who’s a doctor now. He continues that the reason why he’d stolen Sung Eun’s sneakers back in the day was because he’d wanted to make him angry. Sung Eun then teases him about getting angry well enough to cause damage to his injury and Han Mo apologizes for his past behavior. Just as he’s explaining that he’d been young, he collapses and goes into shock and Sung Eun notices the indentation on Han Mo’s neck. He immediately rushes to the nurses station, looking for Moon Kyung and the minute he sees her, he blurts out that Han Mo’s reacting to the antibiotic she’d administered. He accuses of not having done an allergy test and Moon Kyung who can barely hold in her tears insists that she did. The entire conversation is witnessed by the Quintuplet docs or Quints as I would start calling them, which consists of Ji Yong, Duk Joong, Jang Bae, Kyung Jin and Jung Hwan. The Quints get into a discussion as one wonders if maybe Moon Kyung made a mistake whilst another believes that Moon Kyung’s too good at a job for the witch hunt she’s being subjected to. A third points out that the witch hunt might be to get her to leave whilst Ji Yong’s of the opinion that all this is because Moon Kyung has a pull with the union and Hyunsung doesn’t want her to cause any trouble so they’re trying to get her to willingly resign. Young Oh pipes up that that means that there’s a conspiracy and Hyunsung’s behind it. The Quints are shocked, especially when they learn that Young Oh has been in the room the whole while (hahahaha).

7. Young Ho, the hero

Young Oh heads over to Han Mo’s bedside and Sung Eun briefs him about Han Mo still being in shock even though he’d come in with a case of malnutrition. Sung Eun lists out the symptoms as he glances around the room and notices Han Mo’s worn looking belongings. The sight has him even more sad as he admits to being Han Mo’s friend. Young Oh though wonders if Sung Eun’s worried because Han Mo’s his friend or pities him because he’s poor. He tells Sung Eun that if Sung Eun let his emotions overcloud his senses then he never will find out what sent his friend into a state of shock. Young Oh asks if Sung Eun’s sure that he didn’t see Moon Kyung apply the allergy test. Sung Eun’s eyes are shifty but he declares that he didn’t. Young Oh then asks where Moon Kyung is and it turns out that she’s meeting Soon Ho, who she tells that she didn’t do anything wrong. She insists that she doesn’t want to leave without proving her innocence and begs that her transfer be held off until then. Soon Ho though is insistent as he states that her action can cause damage to the hospital, not to mention the malpractice that can be leveled against her. Young Oh walks in at this point to declare that Moon Kyung’s actions hadn’t caused Han Mo to go into anaphylactic shock. Because the man hadn’t been suffering from malnutrition but lupus. And because Hyunsung’s at the moment filled with substitute nurses who aren’t seasoned like Moon Kyung is, the subs didn’t check for Han Mo’s medical background history or test him for allergies. The real culprit therefore is Hyun Joon and his cost cutting plan. He reiterates that Moon Kyung isn’t the one costing Hyunsung money and declares that she is his assistant for Shin Joo’s surgery (Awwww. Young Oh). He asks her if she’s willing to be his assistant and although she hesitates for a brief period, Moon Kyung rises to the occasion and states that she will book the OR. Everything works out well for Shin Joo who’s able to deliver the baby (although a premie) and get her life-saving surgery as well. And a very ecstatic Han Mo is delighted to see that all his symptoms for his lupus are gone. And over in Hyun Joon’s office, Gun Myung comes to save the day as well as he presents Hyun Joon with a presentation showing that the reorganization policy will merely cause a ton of medical malpractices which would lead to several lawsuits and cost Hyunsung even more money in the long run. And to make sure that Hyun Joon understands exactly why he should go with Gun Myung’s suggestion of restoring all the seasoned nurses, the very same presentation is being read by the Chairman at that very moment (awesome. Awesome. Awesome!). As he walks away, Gun Myung remembers his meeting with Young Oh who’d told him that Gun Myung had said that Young Oh was a monster who shouldn’t be in Hyunsung. And now, Young Oh wonders who’s the real monster. Him, or his father who’s the director at a hospital who values profits more than human life. Gun Myung walks away, lost in thought and so doesn’t notice his old acquaintance on a wheelchair. The guy notices him though, and smiles (I repeat. This dude’s creepy).

8. The aftermath of Young Oh’s rescue

Han Mo gets discharged and as a thank you gift, he presents Sung Eun with a new pair of shoes. Sung Eun notices Han Mo’s worn out shoes and looks sad. But he accepts the gift and thanks him for it. He suggests that they head out for drinks sometime and Han Mo cautions him against making promises he can’t keep especially because Han Mo knows that he and Sung Eun won’t be running into each other any time soon. Sung Eun then tells Han Mo that lupus isn’t fatal and so he should take better care of himself. Han Mo thanks him for the advice and walks away and when Sung Eun turns around, he sees Young Oh. He thanks Young Oh for giving him the opportunity to be a good doctor to his friend and Young Oh tells him to extend the thanks to Moon Kyung instead. He walks away, leaving Moon Kyung to scowl at Sung Eun. She’s not angry for long however and soon they two of them are smiling and going over Han Mo’s gift. Young Oh walks to the neonatal unit where he gazes at Shin Joo’s premature baby. Moon Kyung joins him and informs him that Shin Joo’s decided to give up on the baby because she can’t afford to care for him. Young Oh concludes that the baby who was needed by everyone ended up wanted by no one. Moon Kyung tells the baby that nevertheless, she’s happy that he was born into the world as sometimes in life, someone you didn’t expect to help you, reaches out to help. She glances at Young Oh (awww) and tells the baby that she saw a miracle like that happen today (awwwwww. And sweet Young Oh’s still unaware of it) and she’s sure it will happen to the baby as well. She continues that he’ll figure out how to go on with his life and welcomes him into the world.

9. Giving Young Oh his answer

Later that night, Young Oh and Jin Sung grab coffee together and as they walk down the street, she asks him if she can give him her answer now. Young Oh scoffs at her wanting to answer him on the busy noisy street and continues walking. When they finally settle at a street basketball court, Jin Sung asks if she can now give her answer. Young Oh doesn’t try stopping her and so she tells him that she’s given it a lot of thought and she thinks that… Young Oh cuts her off, declares that it’s a beautiful night and then takes her pulse (hahaha). He tells her that she’s very nervous and suggests they play a game to relieve her nervousness (hehehe. I think you’re the nervous one Young Oh). They then engage in a game of one on one and Jin Sung takes to basketball very well. When she’s finally exhausted, she suggests they stop and Young Oh figures that seeing that she’s very tired, they should have their conversation on another day then (hahahaha). Young Oh makes to leave but Jin Sung runs to meet him and he asks her if she doesn’t know why he’s acting the way he’s doing. He admits that for the first time in his life, he’s afraid. He’s afraid of what her reply will be and how he will react and just as he tells Jin Sung that they should talk the next day, she leans forward and kisses him (wowza! Wow!!!! I did not see that coming. That’s awesome!). She pulls back and tells him that that’s her answer. She laughs that she’s been trying to tell him since but he wouldn’t let her. Young Oh just stands there stunned and Jin Sung tells him that she knows she’s not ready for it but she’s sure that if it’s with him, then she’s willing to give it a shot. Young Oh still doesn’t say nothing and a jittery Jin Sung goes to grab her coffee, thanks him for the drink and walks away, all the while tossing glances back at Young Oh who raises his fingers to his lips and then brings his hand and places it over his rapidly heart (awwww. Baby. You know love).

10. Young Oh believes he’s still broken (nooooo. Don’t listen to her Young Oh)

The next morning, Young Oh pays a visit to Min Jae and tells her that she’s right: he is changing. He asks for an MRI and Min Jae meets with him to tell him his results. On the other hand, Suk Joo comes to see Gun Myung and informs him that their worse fears have been confirmed: Hyunsung’s received an influx of foreign investments. Gun Myung rushes into Hyun Joon’s office to ask if it’s true and is greeted by his old acquaintance (damn I hate the man’s smarmy smirk). Meanwhile, over in the ER, Han Mo’s wheeled in after having fallen whilst he was doing his job of installing air conditioners. Young Oh immediately starts chest compressions and Sung Eun who spots Han Mo’s battered sneakers comes running in, crying that this shouldn’t be happening as he’d just discharged Han Mo hours prior. He begs Young Oh to save his friend and when Han Mo finally flatlines, he loses it and starts to wail. Young Oh can only hear ringing in his ears as he looks around and sees everyone else tearing up at the moment whilst he’s the only one not crying. He walks away dazed and tells us that he never learned how to cry. We then flash to Min Jae telling him that it’s just as she suspected, his frontal lobe’s the same (bitch. Shut the fuck up). We then cut to Jin Sung running to come meet Young Oh as she asks him if he needs his WiFi. Young Oh tells her that it’s not the case as he’s learned that the signal was never there (no. It’s there. We feel it). He tells her that he doesn’t want to deceive Jin Sung and Jin Sung asks him what’s the problem. Young Oh replies that he’s still the same, he’s never going to change, she and he can’t be together and so it’s end of transmission. And with those words, he walks away (nooooooooo. Come back Young Oh. Come baaaaaaaack).

Character I wanted to bitchslap:

Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 5.46.01 PMBecause this bitch reduced a person, a human being into nothing but a machine whose sole purpose is to die so the precious baby her client wants can survive. Forget tossing her over Ho Young’s shoulder, I want her bitchslapped till she loses all her teeth first.

Headache inducing moment:

Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 7.55.35 PMWhat can I say, hearing Young Oh telling Jin Sung that they’re now over was like someone stabbed me in the heart. Seriously though. Why?!!!!!!!!!

This episode’s a Negroni. It’s deliciously sweet in the little ways Young Oh kept changing and going to the bat for everyone. From him standing up for Shin Joo who needed the time to come to her decision, to him defending Moon Kyung from her wrongful dismissal and to him helping Sung Eun to be a better friend. And then there’s the love story. The love that shined bright and pure and damn I loved it. Young Oh’s happy with Jin Sung and that made me happy by extension. But Min Jae feeding him her poison left a bitter taste in my mouth especially because she seems happy to be proved right. Like she doesn’t want it to be that Young Oh’s actually changing. She doesn’t want that the man she thinks of as a psychopath is turning human. And that thought irritates me. And then, the final scene with the break up and Young Oh stating that the transmission is now lost had my heart shattering. But honestly though, this drama is just so damn good!
